In Montevideo, Uruguay, the sidewalk tiles break away at the bases of huge trees lining the streets. The first thing I notice every time I come is that all walls are covered with messages: tributes, poetry, murals, urgent political scribbles. As Eduardo Galeano said, the walls speak. It's been ten years of visiting to spend time with my new family and friends - playing music, stepping into the world of earthy Tango revival, Spanish guitars carrying the songs, Candombe rumbling through the streets. And so, creative process starts to happen, bringing together the parallels and tensions of South and North with a cathartic theatricality.
This past December I brought bare unfinished song ideas to the table with Fernando Rosa as my main collaborator and link to musical communities of Montevideo. Through him I met guitarist Federico Brann. We found ourselves playing with everything from Tango and Jazz Manouche to Pink Floydian walls of sound. Divergences and commonalities, deep roots and jarring displacements, pasts and presents interweave in this cross-continental collaboration. I am deeply grateful to the Canada Council For the Arts for generously supporting this creation in process.
